Golden Jubilee in Faifley

Thursday 26th June saw a celebration mass in St. Joseph's, Faifley. It was a celebration of the golden jubilee of Fr. Joseph Coyle, parish priest.

Fr. Coyle was joined by a large band of his fellow priests from the Archdiocese and as far away as Canada. Stories were told and incidents were recalled. The church echoed with laughter. A fitting evening for a big man with a big personality.

Fr. Coyle's service has not been confined to parish work. For the last forty one years he has played a vital role in the Propagation of the Faith in Glasgow and at national level.

Fr. Coyle in 1958

In 1967, while assistant priest in St. Alphonsus he became the Glasgow Director and Treasurer of the Propagation of the Faith.

In 1978 he became National Secretary and Glasgow Treasurer for Propagation of the Faith.

In 1987 he gave up the post of Glasgow Treasurer and continued as National Secretary. Fr. Coyle had expressed a desire to become a mission priest but was needed in Glasgow. He has, however, devoted forty one years of faithful service to the missions through his work for the Pontifical Mission Societies, now MISSIO Scotland.

As Bishop John Mone asked, "where will we find the priests to replace the likes of Fr. Coyle?"

At MISSIO we hope to have Fr. Coyle with us for many years to come.
